JLPT N5 reading practice
Read one short N5-level Japanese passage and answer two comprehension questions about it — no account, no signup, no timer. The passage stays on screen the whole time, because comprehension is the thing being practised, not memory.
You won't be told whether the first question was right until you have answered the second. That is deliberate: knowing you got one wrong changes how you read the next question, and at N5 both questions usually lean on the same two or three sentences.
Read one N5 passage, answer two questions
One short Japanese passage and two comprehension questions. The passage stays on screen while you answer, and you see how you did — with explanations — once both answers are in. Nothing is saved.
What Mini Reading tests
Each sample gives you one authored Japanese text — a message, a short notice, an email, or a small description of something everyday — and two questions about what it actually says.
At N5 the questions are mostly about locating stated information: what time something starts, who is doing what, where to go, what is being asked for. The skill is reading a whole short text for meaning rather than translating it word by word.
- A note from a friend about meeting up
- A short shop or classroom notice with times
- A simple email asking for something
- A few sentences describing a daily routine
- Two questions per passage, four options each
What N5 reading asks of you
N5 reading works with familiar, everyday material written in basic vocabulary and kanji. Passages are short — a handful of sentences — and the answer is nearly always stated somewhere in the text rather than implied.
The usual difficulty at this level is not the grammar; it is nerve. Learners who can read every word individually still freeze at a paragraph. Short Japanese reading practice in small, complete units is how that goes away.
How the sample works
- Press Start reading practice. One active N5 passage is chosen at random, along with two of its comprehension questions.
- Read the passage. Furigana is OFF by default here — reading unaided is the exercise — and Show reading help turns it on for the passage, the questions, and the options whenever you want it.
- Answer the first question from four options. You get an acknowledgement, not a verdict: no correctness, no correct answer, no explanation.
- Answer the second question. Both answers are then checked on our side and you get the combined review — your score, the correct option for each question, and a written explanation, with the passage still there to look back at.
- Nothing is saved. Draw a fresh passage as many times as you like.
Why short reading practice is useful
Grammar and vocabulary drills work one sentence at a time. Reading a complete short passage is the only way to practise holding a text in your head while you answer a question about it.
Both answers are submitted before anything is revealed, so the second question measures your reading rather than your reaction to the first result.
One passage and two questions is a few minutes. That is a length you can repeat daily, which is what moves reading speed.
