JLPT N3 reading practice
Read one N3-level Japanese passage and answer two comprehension questions, without an account. The passage stays on screen while you answer, and nothing is revealed until both answers are submitted.
N3 is the level where reading starts to cost real attention. The passages are long enough that you have to hold a position while you check another part of the text — which is precisely what the exam's reading section asks for.
Read one N3 passage, answer two questions
One short Japanese passage and two comprehension questions. The passage stays on screen while you answer, and you see how you did — with explanations — once both answers are in. Nothing is saved.
What Mini Reading tests
One authored Japanese text per sample — a short explanation, an opinion, a description, or a piece of workplace correspondence — and two questions about it.
At N3 the questions move past locating a fact. They ask what the passage is mostly about, why something happened, or what the writer is getting at — and the wrong options are usually true statements that simply are not the answer to the question.
- A short opinion with a stated reason
- An explanation of why something is done a certain way
- A longer notice with conditions or exceptions
- A description that contrasts two situations
- Two questions per passage, four options each
What N3 reading asks of you
N3 sits between everyday Japanese and the language of articles and workplaces. Passages carry more kanji, more abstract vocabulary, and more sentences whose point arrives at the very end.
The characteristic N3 mistake is answering from a keyword. A word from the question appears in the passage, and the sentence around it turns out to be a counter-example or someone else's opinion. Reading whole passages under a question is how that habit gets unlearned.
How the sample works
- Press Start reading practice. One active N3 passage is chosen at random, with two of its comprehension questions.
- Read the passage. Furigana is off by default at this level — decoding unaided is part of the practice — and Show reading help turns it on when you want it.
- Answer the first question from four options. The response is an acknowledgement only: no verdict, no correct option, no explanation.
- Answer the second. Both answers are then graded on our side, and the combined review shows your score, the correct option for each question, and an explanation for each, with the passage still available above.
- Nothing is saved, and you can draw a new passage immediately.
Why short reading practice is useful
Two questions on one passage force you to read with a purpose, which is the difference between understanding a text and recognizing its vocabulary.
At N3 the two questions often approach the same paragraph from different angles. Revealing the first verdict would hand you half the second answer.
A reading question with two defensible answers teaches the wrong lesson, so every passage is human-written and every question is checked against the text it claims to test.
