JLPT N4 reading practice

N4 is where reading stops being decoding. The sentences connect to each other, and the question is usually about the relationship between them rather than about any one line.

What Mini Reading tests
One authored Japanese text per sample — an email, a notice, a message, or a short explanation of how something works — and two comprehension questions drawn from it.
At N4 the questions start asking why as well as what: why someone is writing, what they want the reader to do, which of two things the writer actually chose. The answer is still in the text, but it is spread across it.

What changes at N4
N4 passages are longer than N5 ones and built out of connected clauses — て-form chains, conditionals, reported speech — so the meaning of one sentence often depends on the one before it.
That is why reading practice at this level pays off more than reading a grammar list does. You can know 〜たら and 〜ば perfectly and still misread a paragraph that hangs on which one the writer used.
How the sample works
- Press Start reading practice. One active N4 passage is drawn at random with two of its comprehension questions.
- Read the passage. Furigana is off by default — reading it unaided is the exercise — and Show reading help turns it on for everything on screen.
- Answer the first question. You get an acknowledgement only: no correctness, no correct option, no explanation.
- Answer the second. Both are then graded on our side and the combined review appears — the score, the correct option for each, and an explanation for each, with the passage still on screen.
- Nothing is saved, and another passage is one click away.
Why short reading practice is useful
N4 grammar mostly does its work between clauses. A passage is the smallest unit where that is visible at all.
Holding the review back means the second question tests your reading of the passage, not your recovery from a wrong first answer.
The passage stays with the review, so you can find the line that made the correct option correct instead of taking our word for it.
